Designer Showhouse
Brooklyn, NY

A bedroom with a bed, side table, and two windows with brown curtains. There is artwork on the wall and a table with decorative objects, a lamp, and a chair nearby.

Selected as one of 20 designers for the biannual Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse, Brian Cash Works began designing its guest room by looking closely at the home's context. The 1852 Greek Revival brownstone rose at the height of the Victorian Age, when respectability and domesticity were all but dictated. Yet just outside the window glows the neon sign of the Hotel St. George, a center of gay life in Brooklyn from the 1920s to the 1970s. That very vantage served as the primary inspiration for the concept: a hospitality-inspired room staging the tension between the domestic and the subversive, where a patchwork quilt layers itself alongside a BDSM-detailed pouf. The goal was to create a narrative-forward space that would reveal itself the longer one stays.

Living room with a wooden desk, a black leather chair, a vase with yellow-green flowers, a wall mirror, framed artwork, a floor lamp, and a television partially reflected in the mirror.
A room divider with black star patterns on cream-colored panels, standing on a beige carpet in a room with pink walls and a closed door. Part of a bed with a quilted bedspread is visible in the corner.

A room that stages the tension between the domestic and the subversive across time

A bedroom with a bed, nightstand, window with brown curtain, and a wall hanging. The bed has a white and beige striped headboard, white sheets, and a red and beige quilt. A pillow with a white pillowcase and a smaller decorative cushion with red, black, and white geometric patterns are on the bed. The nightstand has a vase with yellow flowers, a gray lamp, and a red object. Outside the window, tree branches with green leaves are visible.
